She Gets Up While It Is Still Night: A Saturday Reminder That Your Quiet Work Is Seen

"She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family and portions for her female servants."
— Proverbs 31:15 (NIV)

Okay, so before we go any further: yes, we're talking about the Proverbs 31 woman. I know. I used to roll my eyes at her too. She spins her own flax, she buys a field, she never seems to lose her temper at bedtime. Some mornings she feels less like an encouragement and more like a critique.

But read verse 15 slowly and notice what it actually says. It doesn't say she rises early because she's superhuman. It says she rises early because people she loves are going to be hungry, and she intends to be ready. That's it. That's the whole verse. Before the sun comes up, she's already thinking about somebody else's nourishment.

If you've ever stood barefoot in a dark kitchen at 6 a.m., preheating the oven while the house is still quiet, congratulations. You're already in this verse.

The night-before mom

Here's the thing about "while it is still night": it means nobody sees it. Not the sunrise, not the kids, not social media. The Proverbs 31 woman's early rising wasn't performance; it was preparation. And isn't that most of motherhood? The packed lunches assembled the night before. The groceries ordered in the carpool line. The dinner plan scribbled on the back of a receipt while everyone else is asleep.

And that "portions for her female servants" part? In her world, providing meant making sure everyone under her roof had what they needed for the day, including the people who helped her run it. In your world, it might look like making a double batch of muffins so there's one for the babysitter, or setting aside a warm plate for a husband who gets home late. Provision isn't just feeding your people; it's thinking ahead so nobody gets forgotten.

What this looks like in a real kitchen on a real Saturday

1. Do one thing tonight for tomorrow's breakfast. Set out the pans, mix the dry ingredients for pancakes, or hard-boil a few eggs while you clean up dinner. Future-you at 7 a.m. will feel like someone quietly took care of her.

2. Portion before anyone is hungry. The Proverbs 31 woman didn't wait for the requests to pile up. Try pre-portioning snacks for the week on Sunday afternoon: cut fruit, fill little containers, stash granola bars. When the "Mom, I'm hungry" hits, you're not scrambling, you're just opening the fridge.

3. Let "provides" mean presence, not perfection. She provided food; the verse doesn't say she provided a tablescape. Scrambled eggs eaten together at the counter with dishes still in the sink counts. It has always counted.

The part that makes this grace, not pressure

Maybe you're reading this on four hours of sleep, and the last thing you need is one more woman telling you to wake up earlier. That's not what this verse is asking. The point of Proverbs 31 was never "do more." It's a portrait of a woman whose strength comes from somewhere beyond herself. Just a few verses later it says she can "laugh at the days to come," because her hope isn't in her own hustle. Her early mornings were an overflow of love, not an audition for it.

So if you got up this morning and the first thing you did was put your hands to work for the people in your house, even if "work" was pressing the button on the coffee maker and pouring cereal, you are providing. You are the warm kitchen light someone else woke up to. God sees the 5 a.m. version of you, the one nobody applauds, and Scripture says that woman is worth far more than rubies.

A short prayer for today

Lord, thank You for seeing the quiet hours no one else notices. Meet me in my kitchen this morning. Give me strength to provide for my family with joy, and remind me that my worth was never on the line to begin with. Amen.

This is a lot of why I built Petal Kitchen: a place that does some of the early-rising for you, with meal plans and quick dinners so your "while it is still night" can be a little shorter and a little softer.
